When working in still life, I am most interested in composition. I enjoy physical task and activity of taping, tying, tacking and nailing objects in a manner that challenges traditional still life practices. Balance is at the center of my paintings, whether a balance of values, weight of objects, or the physical balance in the real composition I am painting. Taking from Bay Area painters like Diebenkorn and Thiebaud, I build from the negative spaces of shadow, searching for the lack of light the objects create.
