Transition to Co-ops

The owners of Art Gym are ready to retire but want the facility to be still accessible to artists. December 23, 2025 is when we close for the holidays. After December 31,
2025, Art Gym will no longer have employees to staff the building but it will be available in February 2026 for lease to artmaking or artrelated groups. There will be a January break to clean and do maintenance on the facility.

We have been working with you, our members, about transitioning to an artist co-op model. This page is a resource for members to access information and updates about the transition to an artist co-op model.

8/22/25 – During the 3rd membership meeting, the group formed an expanded Steering Committee with representation from 2D/Mixed Media/Digital, Metalsmithing, Performance, Printmaking members. The purpose of the steering committee is to:

  • To establish a timeline for steering committee
  • To define responsibilities for steering committee
  • To task steering committee to propose co-op model
  • To define communication protocol for steering committee, and larger member community

During the 1st and 2nd membership meetings, the idea of our members forming an artist co-op was presented during the first meeting and which workspaces would be available to rent. The 2nd meeting included final square footage cost of $1.08 per square foot pricing for the workspaces. Other costs to consider were presented such as consumable supplies, general liability insurance and software fees. An initial steering committee was formed to gather interest from members in specific disciplines.

On 6/11/25, an email was sent to current and paused members announcing Art Gym will be changing in 2026. The owners of Art Gym are going to retire at the end of the year but still want the workspace and equipment to be accessible to artists. A variety of options to transition to were explored by staff and it was determined a transition to an artist co-op was the most viable option.

Co-op Examples

RedBird Press (truly a co-op as of now but they are currently being fiscally sponsored by a nonprofit and they will eventually seek to become their own nonprofit)

ASPCO (they consider themselves a non-profit cooperative)

High Point Printmaking (the co-op seems to be part of a larger nonprofit entity)
