Kathryn Oberdorfer
Painter and Printmaker
I am an abstract painter working primarily with acrylics. I’m originally from Washington DC and am a long-time Denver resident. I hold a BFA from University of Denver and am a member of Spark Gallery.
What made you want to join Art Gym? I joined Art Gym in Spring 2023 after participating in printmaking workshops led by Sue Oehme. Inspired by her intuitive approach, I decided to join AG to have a place to make prints for my exhibition “Remembering August” which is on display at Spark Gallery, 900 Santa Fe Drive, though January 28th. Exhibition Announcement
How has Art Gym helped with your art practice? Art Gym is a special art community and is well equipped for printmaking. Staff is knowledgeable and available. There are opportunities to show and sell work, and also to become familiar with Denver’s art scene through monthly Art Crawls.
What are you hoping to communicate through your work? I invite my viewers to observe their surroundings differently. Currently, I’m experimenting with linear elements through the use of embroidery threads, strings and tape alongside of traditional drawing materials.
Who and/or what are some of your biggest artistic influences? I’m rooted in the era of Abstract Expressionism including Joan Mitchell and Cy Twombly as well as contemporary artist Amy Sillman.
What does your artwork mean to you? I believe art nourishes the human soul.
