“My work has been inspired by nature and focused on landscapes for many years using geometric shapes and bold color, but this new exploration into abstraction has given me the freedom to create free flowing spaces with spontaneous shapes and color using mixed mediums.”
What made you want to join Art Gym? I live in the neighborhood and I’ve always been curious about the space. A few years ago, I attended an exhibition a friend was having at Art Gym, and I was inspired by the space and mission. It just felt like a welcoming place that I wanted to be a part of.
How has Art Gym helped with your art practice? I’m the type of artist who has experienced creative dry spells, but I’ve been busy creating since joining Art Gym. It’s very inspiring to be among other artists. I’ve met good people here and always feel welcome. I’ve had the opportunity to participate in member activities and classes here as well, which has helped me to learn and grow as an artist.
What are you hoping to communicate through your work? I’ve been exploring abstract expressionism for the last couple years. Traditionally, I’ve been a landscape painter. My work has been inspired by nature and focused on landscapes for many years using geometric shapes and bold color, but this new exploration into abstraction has given me the freedom to create free flowing spaces with spontaneous shapes and color using mixed mediums. Painting allows me to express myself from personal experiences. I’m really happy where this style has taken me in my work.
Who and/or what are some of your biggest artistic influences? I’ve been inspired by artists such as Joan Miro, Georgia O’Keefe, Wassily Kandinsky and Marc Chagall to name a few. While studying art in college I was influenced by my instructor and artist, Mel Carter and local painters, Tracy and Sushi Felix. Inspiration also comes from the natural world and amazing places I’ve traveled to.
What does your artwork mean to you? Being an artist is a gift. Growing up I was discouraged from being an artist for practical reasons, but it’s an innate part of me.
