Isabella Day
Multimedia
My name is Isabella Day and I am a multimedia artist that works with metal, tattooing, painting, and sculpting mostly. I was born and raised all over Colorado.
What made you want to join Art Gym? I joined the Art Gym specifically for the metalsmithing resources to make my self-defense jewelry. While working here and participating in events found that the community and people are amazing and so inspiring too.
How has Art Gym helped with your art practice? The resources and the community have been so amazing, and I feel so inspired by the Art Gym. I’ve really enjoyed working here, I love the space, the people, and the critiques have been so amazing to get feedback. It’s honestly such a beautiful space. I am so grateful to have been a part of it and I feel so supported here too.
What are you hoping to communicate through your work? I hope to empower others, instill confidence, and facilitate conversations about safety.
Who and/or what are some of your biggest artistic influences? My metalsmithing teacher at Metro, Leslie Boyd, has been a huge inspiration and mentor for me. Also growing up with artists and my beautiful friends always inspire me to go further and continue creating.
What does your artwork mean to you? For a long time, I just wanted to create beautiful things, I painted these huge portraits of people I love and found beautiful. I surrounded them with flowers and gold. The reason I started in jewelry was to also create beautiful ornate pieces. What I do now is different, it not about beauty so much anymore. The jewelry I make is a result of my pain, my trauma, and trying to feel safe in this world again. This upcoming exhibit means so much to me but is so hard to put out there because of this. I know people can relate to this though and I know now that conversations around sexual violence are important to have, because I wish I was better prepared, and I wish that people would talk about it more, even though it is hard.
