Join Art Gym Denver for Outliers – Recent Mixed Media Work by Jason Pollen, hanging mixed media orbs within orbs that are created through painting, stitching, dyeing, laser cutting and collage. His exhibit will also feature works from his Portals, Descendants and Spanners series.
Jason is professor emeritus of the Kansas City Art Institute and president emeritus of the Surface Design Association. In his recent body of work, The Outlier series, Jason drew creative inspiration while experimenting with a digital laser-cutter in the institute’s David T. Beals Studio for Art and Technology. This unique tool allows for intricate pierced patterns in the wood that make up the independently rotating circles within circles. “The exhilarating exploration of new technologies gives me unanticipated creative options,”he says. “But it is still the dye, paint, textiles and threat that constitute the ‘main event’ in most of my works.”
Jason earned his bachelor’s degree and master’s in painting from City College of New York. He moved to Paris, where he worked for several years as a textile designer, creating collections for, among many others—Chanel, Dior, Givenchy and Yves St. Laurent. He began his teaching career as a lecturer at the Royal College of Art in London, then held positions at the Pratt Institute and Parsons School of Design in New York. He accepted a position with the Kansas City Art Institute in 1983 and chaired the Fiber Department from 1997 to 2010. He has shown his works both nationally and internationally including solo exhibitions in museums and galleries in Minneapolis, Philadelphia, Lincoln, Neb., and numerous exhibitions in the Kansas City metropolitan area. Jason has also participated in group exhibitions in Italy, Germany, Poland, Japan, and in Las Vegas, St. Louis, Kansas City, Lakewood, Colo., in the United States. His exhibition in the Art Gym Gallery will be on display through June 8, 2018.
