Son of Stump Performance

June 2, 2022 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Ink drawing of an exaggerated man with a second image of someone singing and playing the guitar

In conjunction with his exhibition, Snake and Ox Spirits in The Leyden Jar, artist Ben Hesse will be hosting a series of performances as part of his musical effort, Son of Stump, on May 21, May 27, June 2, and June 9. All performances will begin at 7pm.

I am obsessed with the morbid display of the human form.

I work predominantly in Sumi ink on both Bristol board and watercolor paper, utilizing brush, micron marker and airbrush. I’m interested in pursuing a variety of themes including the human relationship to nature, cultural destruction, and damaged futures.

My current body of work is focused on my interests in the human desire to transcend, and how it plays out in the natural world. What do our shadows look like walking across the planet and interacting with it in positive and negative ways? Pretentious? That’s alright, you can say it.

The Sumi ink came about as a challenge enforced upon myself due to difficulties getting art supplies during my Peace Corps service in Lanzhou, China. It has been a difficult medium to work with, yet the effects have been well worth the hours of practice.

“Son of Stump” is my musical performance occurring next door in the performance space. Like my recent focus on Sumi Ink, this project grew out of my time in Lanzhou and is an expression of my music through song writing that focuses on my ever-evolving relationship with the world around me. All my pieces are composed using bass guitar, programmed drums, and a diverse array of other electronic instruments.
