Art Gym Denver is thrilled to present Ossify by Austin Armstrong in the Common Space Gallery with an opening reception January 31 from 5 – 8PM. Ossify is an examination of the changes taking place in Denver through printmaking.
Printmaker Austin Armstrong focuses his art practice on how theological inconsistencies and modern propaganda affect western society and development, and his new series, Ossify, fits into these concepts perfectly. Ossify is the aging process that causes bones to become hard and resistant to change. Armstrong uses this process to examine Denver and the change which it is currently experiencing. When discussing this concept, he said “Ossify asks what it means for Colorado to change in ways that cannot be undone, and what it means to see beauty in the opportunity for rejuvenated life.” Armstrong uses screen printing and lithography together, building layers of drawings, images and icons. He utilizes corporate icons and logos as the half tone pattern in his prints, demonstrating the way these groups cover up the history that exists in Denver. The series documents buildings due for demolition and what happens with this kind of homogenization and gentrification.
