Nature Changes

July 18, 2019 - August 9, 2019

Nature Changes gallery graphic. Hartbauer, Kolouch, Loughridge, Nasky, Passaro, Ries and Schroder. July 18th thru August 9th

Art Gym Gallery is thrilled to exhibit a curated members’ show titled Nature Changes. In a world of an ever-evolving environment, these artists take it upon themselves to document the changes that take place in nature. The exhibition will be open from July 18 – August 9. Join us for the opening reception on Thursday, July 18 from 5-8PM.

In Art Gym member Thomas Ries’ artist statement for his series, he states

“Earth’s forces, from the imperceptible to the catastrophic, inform our own physical and psychological activity. Quietly stirring just under the fragile surface of the human psyche, the instincts, yearnings, and behaviors unique to the human species each have a corresponding embodiment in the activities constantly reshaping the Earth’s surface.”

This idea of how artists react to Earth’s constantly reshaping surface is the motivation behind the newest Art Gym Gallery exhibition, Nature Changes. Each artist included in the show use nature to drive their artistic practice, and the work reflects this passion. Sculpture, painting, printmaking and mixed media work are all used to explore evolving landscapes. A key example of this is Gigia Kolouch’s Going Home, a series of five mixed media encaustic paintings documenting transformations in a garden over a 40-year span. The series asks questions about how our history with a place alters our perception of home. How do we as humans change with nature, and how do react to those changes as artists?

Nature Changes will include works by Art Gym members Steve Hartbauer, Gigia Kolouch, Leon Loughridge, Marilyn Rea Nasky, John Passaro, Thomas Ries, and Noreen Schroder.
