July 22, 2017 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Kyle Peets Demo & Artist Talk. July 22nd, 2017

Art Gym is happy to welcome Kyle Peets, current resident at PlatteForum, as our guest artist!

Kyle has been using Art Gym’s workspace to create some of the work for his PlatteForum residency project, “THE BIG GAME”, a collaborative performance about a group of futuristic activists who use a new sport to take a stand agains inequality and oppression.

Kyle will be giving an artist talk and showing us how to create White Line Woodcuts. Don’t miss out–it’s sure to be a fascinating conversation!

1:00pm – Artist Talk with PlatteForum Resident Artist Kyle Peets
2:00pm – Kyle on White Line Woodcuts Demo

About Kyle Peets:
Kyle Peets’ work is centered on the narratives we create to cope when feeling small in the face of things that are bigger than us, with the assumption that in many cases our narratives are implicated in some type of belief system that informs our identity. Peets uses mischief and the uncanny to tilt those systems of knowledge, and poke holes in their logic to reveal the fragility of these systems and how breaking them can allow us to re-imagine our place in the world.

About White Line Woodcuts:
Learn about the White Line Woodcut process from artist Kyle Peets, who will show examples of his own work, while offering advice on how you can work in this versatile press-free technique on your own. In white line woodcuts, images are made by carving out the contours of the forms of the image into the woodblock, applying water color or Akua ink directly onto the block, then burnishing the ink onto the paper. It is a quasi painting and printing technique that can blend the unique vernacular of both worlds.

About Kyle’s time at PlatteForum:
Kyle Peet’s residency with PlatteForum began on June 5th. During his 8-week residency, he has been working on THE BIG GAME, which is a collaborative performance created from a fictional premise: it’s the year 2117 and the world has all but been destroyed by capitalist-fed greed and violence. Kyle Peets and the ArtLab interns belong to a group of activists who have recently discovered an underground repository of athletic gear as well as a tattered book on the history of sports. Obligated by a sense of duty to the new world, this team re-introduces their findings to our frail world by inventing a new sport. In this new sport, it is the activist-athletes who work to take a stand against inequality and oppression. THE BIG GAME, at 6pm on July 27th, will be the debut performance of this new sport accompanied by all the accoutrements of a good spectacle; loud music, show lighting, food vendors, merchandise tables and screaming die hard fans.

THE BIG GAME will occur at 6PM on Thursday, July 27 with a free, public performance at a soon-to-be-announced location.
Check for updates.

During the summer-long session to create THE BIG GAME, Kyle Peets and the ArtLab interns created a companion exhibition called, TRAINING CAMP, which serves as a functional gym, library, zine factory, think tank, and empathy center so activists can train their minds and bodies for THE BIG GAME. TRAINING CAMP is open now through to the end of Peets’ residency, on July 27th.
