Exhibit Reception: “Are We There Yet?”

Thursday, Jan 8 | 6-9PM
Movement across media—performance, stop-motion animation, printmaking, and paper arts—intersects with storytelling in unexpected ways in the upcoming exhibition “Are We There Yet?” This year’s show is especially meaningful, as it marks the final Create Award exhibition following a nine-year run. The award recipients work as a cohort, using their materials stipend, mentorship, and creative community to push one another to expand their ideas. See what happens when a six-month residency brings an unlikely set of creators together for a powerful exhibition, where kindness, love, and respect move stories in unexpected directions. “Are We There Yet?” opens with a reception on January 8th from 6PM – 9PM. Then hear from the artists on January 22nd at 6 PM as they share the unexpected points where their distinct perspectives converge.
Where movement becomes the story, the Create Award becomes the stage! Through performance, artist Apple Hultz explores how gender expectations reshape the body, reclaiming what was lost, healing the present, and envisioning a queer, liberated future.
Producing bold stop-motion storytelling, directors AJ Dubler and Carmela Murphy ignite conversation while challenging convention around one of today’s most polarizing subjects: trans and queer youth. From developing scripts to hand carving sets and even designing puppets, viewers will get a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to bring this story to life.
What began as the fluid motion of sketchbook doodles for printmaker Ren Coryell has become a deliberate act of storytelling through multiple media. Whether making an impression through bold prints or drawing on abstract ideas, audiences can experience the full range of creative expression when restraints are lifted and courage is celebrated.
“Are We There Yet?” on display from January 8th through February 1st only at Art Gym.
