Open July 28-August 21. Reception on August 4.
Art Gym is excited to present “My Beautifully Insane Neurotic Brain” a solo exhibition of new work from member Eugene Yoon on view in The Leyden Jar. Please join us and the artist for a reception on Thursday August 4 from 6-9PM.
Eugene Yoon started his painting career…well, less than a year ago. With no prior experience in art, Eugene carried the misconception that you had to be in the echelons of Da Vinci, Michaelangelo, and Picasso in order to be considered a legitimate skilled painter. That all changed when Eugene stumbled across a Jean-Michel Basquiat painting on the internet. Eugene became intrigued by Basquiat’s primitive “child-like” street art aesthetic that made painting feel more accessible. It widened the aperture of what was possible. Inspired by Basquiat’s style, Eugene decided to pick up a paintbrush to expel all the neurotic thoughts in his brain and hurl them onto a canvas. This exhibition showcases Eugene’s starting point. It is a visual diary into the inner-workings of his mind. It is an acrylic expression of his dancing thoughts. It is an ongoing experiment of finding his voice. It is a rabbit hole down his beautifully insane neurotic brain.
