A selection of Joyce Coco’s paintings created during her decades as a prolific artist comes together in A Gathering of Paintings at Art Gym. The collection melds her colorist approach to both her abstract and symbolic/iconic paintings. While the colors dazzle and the symbols haunt, it is Joyce’s unrelenting love of painting that dominates her artwork. Joyce has said that she often has no choice in how or what she paints: one painting leads to another while subject matter and design are apparent, unavoidable and immediate. There is a constant thread in all of her creativity. Joyce loves everything about the painting process: the feel of it, the smell of it, the taste of it, the way the brush or palette knife hits the canvas, the color, and even arrival at the studio. Every day she is thankful for the opportunity she has to be creative.
Joyce says that both everyday experiences and extensive travel influence her paintings. She believes select experiences become transmitted through her paintings. As she paints, she communicates with those very moments of perfection in order to taste her life more fully. It is as if the thin line between her and her art is erased as she works.
